8000 SERIES INTERNAL BRIGHTNESS CONTROL.

8000 series power board

You will all be aware of the brightness control on the front of your PCW8256 or PCW8512 but does it turn down enough for you to avoid screen burn (it should turn down to almost nothing) or on the other hand do you have sufficient brightness for comfortable viewing. Most of 8256's or 8512's that I have encountered over the years do need the brightness level reset due, in the main, to just wear on the components.

Should the answer to either of the above questions be 'NO' then you need to adjust the internal brightness control situated on the Power board (see the fig: 1).

The rear casing of your machine will need to be removed, not forgetting to first unplug your printer and remove any add-ons that are fitted. The pre-set control will be seen on the right hand side of the power board looking in from the back. I normally find it helps matters to slide the power board back a little on it's runners.

The simplest way to do the adjustments is with the machine switched on, but do PLEASE NOTE there are some very high voltages within the vicinity of the small pre-set control, so those of you with any doubts should make their adjustments with the machine switched off. This will, of course, mean switching the machine on and off a number of times until the setting is correct.
Firstly turn the brightness control on the front of your machine to a middle setting, then using a small watch makers sized screwdriver (with an insulated handle if working with the machine on) turn the pre-set control either one way or the other until the required level of brightness is obtained. Now test to see if by using the brightness control on the front of your machine that you can turn the brightness almost completely down. I normally then boot the machine using Locoscript to view the results but, of course, you can use whatever programme you wish.

When you are happy with your brightness level refit the casing, printer and add-ons ---- then test everything.
